While the world grieved for 58 innocent victims in Las Vegas and the U.S. continued to struggle to deliver hurricane relief to Puerto Rico, you really had to dig to hear about Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton in full sexist mode. It seems Cam couldn’t control himself when a silly female reporter asked him about the abilities of his talented wide receivers. Instead of simply taking the compliment and bolstering his team, he opened his remarks with a rebuff, an insult to reporter Jourdan Rodrigue.
I get how it feels when a totally unexpected voice speaks up with surprising authority. Anyone who has ever giggled after hearing a precocious 3-year-old bust out an SAT word in perfect context, knows what it’s like witnessing an extraordinarily mismatched sound-to-speaker. I’ll even confess to giggling when my oldest son, whose voice has morphed to an imperceptibly low tone, throws a fit. Nothing like a baritone attempting to whine at his mommy.
But Cam?! Really? Did it really sound so odd to you, in 2017, that a woman – a sports reporter, no less – could ask an educated question about football? Did you stop and giggle when a black man was elected president?
Thank you for ending your sponsorship relationship with him, Dannon. And as for Cam, he’s still one lucky sexist, given the fact that the entire country has been more focused on Vegas or whether Tillerson did or did not call Trump a “moron” than they have been on him. Only those of us who drafted him to our Fantasy Football teams are interested in how this will or will not impact his playing time.
Admittedly, Cam’s idiotic remark was a nice change of pace from the glum news of the week. Thanks for the distraction, Cam. Keep up the good work. But maybe just talk about football next time.
